"What would you buy?" Round 2....

Post by BiggLou55 on Fri Nov 02, 2012 3:04 pm

So.... Forum is really slow today (actually it's a ghost town), so it's time for another round of "Would you buy?"....

This time around, here are the rules:
  1. Your budget is 100,000 in your country's primary currency (USD, CAD, GPB, EUR, ZAR, etc..)
  2. You may only spend this money on cars, trucks, motorcycles, aircraft, watercraft or any other form motorized or nonmotorized transportation.
  3. You may buy as many items as you can within the 100,000 limit.
  4. You must explain why you chose each item and for what they will be used
  5. Optional: Provide images, options, modifications, etc. for each. The more the merrier! Very Happy

Re: "What would you buy?" Round 2....

Post by BiggLou55 on Fri Nov 02, 2012 4:02 pm

I guess I will go first since it's my thread! My options below would make me a VERY happy camper! Very Happy

Vehicle #1 (The Primary Daily Driver):
2013 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon (White with Black Dual Top)
Price: $41,025 (USD) including options
Options: 4.10 Rear Axle; 5-speed slushbox; Uconnect 730N Ent/Nav; Dual Top; Max Tow; Connectivity group; Air Con w/ Auto Climate Control; Heated Front Seats

Jeep OEM & Aftermarket Parts Budget: $7,500
Audio & Electronics: $500
Intake & Exhaust: $1000
Wheels $ Tires: $2000
Suspension & Brakes: $3000
Body & Misc: $1000

TOTAL Jeep Cost: $48,525

Why a Jeep? Because I love them. My best friend in on his third Jeep, and it's a Rubicon (2006). We have a BLAST in it! The 4-doors are for the rest of the family. There is no other 4-door convertible sport utility vehicle currently being produced (at least within this price point). There are a lot of off-road parks within a few hours drive of where I live (and for those of you who watch the PowerBlock on Spike TV, it's produced here in Nashville! Very Happy )...

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Vehicle #2 (The Secondary Driver & Track Day Car):
2013 Subaru BRZ Limited (Satin White Pearl)
Price: $29,658 (USD) including options
Options: Chrome Fuel Door; rear diffuser; wheel locks; mirror with homelink; SPT battery Tie down and Oil Cap; a few other "little" things

BRZ OEM & Aftermarket Parts Budget: $7,500 (or will be applied to BRZ STi when it arrives)
Audio & Electronics: $1000
Intake & Exhaust: $1500
Suspension & Brakes: $1500
Engine & Drivetrain: $1500
Wheels and & Tires: $2000

TOTAL BRZ Cost: $37,158

Why the BRZ? It's the type of car that suits me. While I dream about driving a Ferrari, Lambo or some other exotic someday, I want something that I can have fun with on public roads as well as the occasional track. If there were an STi version available (rumored arrival is late next year), it would be on the list instead of this model. It's a 2+2, so I can still put two boosters and my kids in the back. ALL of the reviews (Motor Trend, Car & Driver, Automobile, Road & Track, Fifth Gear, to name a few) are raving about the BRZ (and the Scion/Toyota cousins) being one of the best driver's cars out there, and THE best under $40,000. Why not the Scion FR-S? I like Scoobies better, and Scion killed my Celica... I'm holding a grudge! Wink

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Vehicle #3 (The Weekend Rider):
BMW G 650 GS Sertão
Price: ~ $9,000 (USD) including options
Options: Lowered Seat

BMW OEM & Aftermarket Parts Budget: $5000
Riding Gear: $2000
Parts & Accessories: $3000

TOTAL G650 Cost: $14,000

Why a BMW motorcycle? I've wanted a bike of my own for as long as I can remember, but I've never been in a position to purchase one. I actually have a motorcycle endorsement on my driver's license. I used to ride with friends when there was a spare bike available, but never had my own. Why a dual sport bike? I'm not a crotch-rocket fan, and I'm over the whole cruiser/custom craze. I want a bike that I can take on day and weekend trips using back roads and even the occasional dirt/gravel path. I'm not looking to do motocross stuff, nor am I looking for a freeway long hauler. What I need is something I could commute to work on or just save for a weekend run down the Trace!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Total Estimated Cost for all 3: $99,683 USD

Heres what I would buy:

2013 Yamaha YZF-R1
Price: $14,490
Reasons: I would mainly get this to ride at a track. It seems very dangerous to ride it on the road because a lot of people don't pay much attention (I know somebody who shattered almost every bone in his body in a motorcycle crash about 3 months ago), so I won't be driving it on the road. If the Aprilia RSV4 didn't cost 40K I would get it, but that is quite a bit over the optimal price range, so I would say that this is one of the next best things.

2013 Cadillac CTS-V Wagon
Price: $63,215
Reasons: It just seems like one of the ultimate cars because it can do practically anything - luxury, power, and definitely fun. It is pretty much the ultimate daily driver until it snows (maybe putting some different tires on it in winter would help a bit). What I like most about it is that it is 2 different cars - a comfortable, sensible daily driver, and a hugely powerful modern muscle car. On top of that, the wagon has quite a bit of space, so it is very practical.

I'm going to save my extra $22,295 for later because I can't think of anything else right now...

A bit of a cop-out, I know, but if given $100k to only spend on vehicles I would have no choice but to invest it and patiently wait for the day I could afford a Ford GT. They used to average around 150k used, but apparently more people are realizing how awesome they are, as the cheapest you can likely snag one now is about 170. I had the opportunity to drive one for about two minutes, and it was just so f'in fun I became hopelessly in love.

Upgrades: Unlikely I could afford any, but if my investments really took off I'd hand my GT over to Hennessey and let them do work. Like 257 mph in a standing mile type of work.

There was an article in Car And Driver about a man that made a road legal indy car in michigan. All you needed was the back half of a kawasaki ninja and he would fabricate the front to look like an indy car. I think it was about 25,000 put together. I'd take that and A late 90's BMW M3. I could probably find one of those in good condition for 18,000. I think I would like to drive a unimog. The left over cash could go towards that.

1: Two race-prepped Honda Civics Si from Compass360 Racing. These cars raced in the 2011 and 2012 Pirelli World Challenge TC class, making them fully legal in the newly reorganized Touring 4 class in SCCA club racing. If the car raced by Shea Holbrook (my wife's favorite driver; her car was built by C360R as well) becomes available, pick that one.

$82,000

2: Two sessions of the Stage 1 Racing School at SimRaceway's performance center which is located at Sears Point, just around the hill from where we live.
$8000

3: Two sessions of the Stage 2 Racing School at Simraceway's performance center. This counts as the full Race School package for purposes of getting SCCA licensed for full racing.
$10,000

4: Getting to race in SCCA events with my wife in matched cars.
Priceless.

Total: $100,000
