OK... I am a fan of both Subaru and Toyota. They make exceptional cars and we own one of each. I drive a 2000 Toyota Celica GT (white, original owner, 95k miles), and my wife drives a 2006 Subaru Forester L.L.Bean. We love both of the cars, and I am a fan for life.... To say I was excited when Subaru and Toyota announced their partnership in building a new RWD sports car in the spirit of the Sprinter Trueno (AE86), is a MAJOR understatement. I was beside myself. A 2+2 RWD true sports car made be Toyota AND Subaru????? Are you freaking kidding me???!!!! YEEEEEEESSSSSSSSS!!!! My car is getting older (turns 12 this July) and I immediately started dreaming about owning one...

Now.... I love the look of the car, the sporty simplicity of the interior, and the aftermarket and future suped up variant future of the car. Having a Toyota badged sports car is just waht we need here in the states. Get Toyota back in the gam........... WTF????? It's coming to the states as a SCION?????? ARE YOU KIDDING ME????? Sad Mad Crying or Very sad The rest of the friggin world is getting it as a Toyota and we get a flippin SCION!!! That is the worst friggin decision Toyota could make. I hit 40 this year and I would sooner buy a Kia or a used Pontiac Aztec before I buy a car with a Scion badge. It's a kiddie, flashy, cheesy, flamboyant, excessive, over the top brand, and aimed at the youth market.

I'm glad I like Subaru, because that's the one I'll buy. It's got a better list of standard and upgrade features and I'm looking forward to the STI version in a few years...

I guess they wouldn't bring it here to the states as a toyota so that they keep their image of sensible, fuel efficient everyday people vehicles. We've come a long way from toyota making cars like the 2000gt, AE86, MR2 , and celicas and supras!

Ummm.... The Celica and MR2 were retired in 2005 to make way for the Scion brand (it was the worst move they've made).... Toyota built it's reputation equally on the shoulders of the Camary.Sienna/Corolla and Celica/MR2/Supra (as well as the Land Cruiser[original]/4-Runner/Tacoma[Hilux]/Rav4). All of them helped built Toyota, but they dropped the sport cars (and trims from the other cars). Honda has pretty much done this as well, and have become the "plain jane" brand. They are still big in the JDM tuning market, but the only sporty model they have is the Civic Si, and that's not saying much.

My wish is that Toyota would just collapse Scion back into Toyota. For the rest of the work, the cars we see as Scions are actually Toyotas.....I won't hold my breath though... They should learn for the US big three, that too many brands is not good.... Ford killed Mercury and only has Lincoln left (which there is rumor of being killed as well); GM killed Olds, Pontiac, Saturn, and sold off Hummer and is left with Chevy, Cadillac, GMC and Buick(maybe Buick will be axed soon too, but China loves the brand, and I GM may have to choose between GMC and Chevy for a truck brand); Chrysler killed Plymouth and Eagle and just have Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge left.

It made sense for Toyota to badge it as a Scion in the US because they ARE trying to target the younger section of the market. No offense Lou, but I don't think they were building it to try and aim it at 40 year olds, but that's just the way Toyota has been since they formed Scion in 2005. Anything that is "young and hip" goes in as a Scion. All the reliability and fuel effeciency ideals are held with the Toyotas. Spare the X-Runner Tacoma and the XRS models of the Corolla and Matrix (my car's younger sister/brother) and there isn't much there in terms of performance oriented Toyotas in the current lineup. And of those three I'd really only want the X-runner. The new XRS' look nice and ride nice, but all they are, is a car with nicer wheels some visual upgrades and a motor upgrade from a 1.8 with about 130 hp to a 2.4 with about 168 hp. Which isn't too bad, but it's not enough IMO.

Now as you and everyone else may know, I am a HUGE Toyota enthusiast and fan (See my post in "what do you drive in real life"). And even my 2005 Matrix XRS was more performance oriented than any Toyota currently available. You had the MR-S spyder, the Celica GTS, and the Matrix and Corolla XRS. The GTS and XRS were a pretty big step above the GT, XR and S models of the Celica, MAtrix and Corolla respectively. They all went from a 1.8L 5-speed 130 hp motor (I could be wrong about the Celica power Lou for your GT?) and upgraded to a 1.8L 6-speed 180 hp motor with VVTL-i. The L being key there which stands for LIFT which is basically Toyota's version of Honda's Vtec.

After that, all the performance basically went out the window. However, I do like the new car they have coming out. Even though I as well would've liked it ot be badged as a Toyota so they could get some of that fun back into their name. But don't dare say you'd rather drive a Kia than a Scion. Don't let a badge speak for you. You speak for the badge. Or even better, buy one and re-badge it yourself. Laughing

And it does suck that both Toyota and Honda have gone to being reliable and family oriented (even though I despise most Hondas lol). I hope someday we get back to the Toyota/Honda war with performance. Even if it's with fun cars that don't necessarily need tuning and upgrading. The FR-S won't have anything on the S2K, but I would like to see something in the near future be able to take it on, badged as a Toyota.

P.S. I wouldn't be surprised if Ford kills Lincoln soon too, it doesn't have the market share in the luxury market like it used to. And I heard GM kept Buick specifically because of how well it sells overseas. I don't se Buick going away anytime soon because they keep cranking out new and updated models. And I think they'd kill GMC before getting rid of the Chevy branded trucks. All they'd have to do is consolidate the GMC's and pop a chevy badge on them.
