Alien ships have appeared over cities all across the world. While at first we thought they might have come in peace, they soon put that thought to rest when they attacked and began capturing Earthlings. With a burst of sudden action, the XCOM Initiative was put into action by world governments. A number of elite military groups were activated and sent to fight the alien threat.

This is the story of one of those groups: The U2SC Squadron.

The rules:
-I'm playing in "Ironman Mode": this means that I cannot manually save or reload. This means if someone dies, they're GONE!
-I'm picking names based on the roster of racing numbers. I'm starting mostly with regulars that I'm most familiar with, but as casualties pile up, replacements will get assigned in based on random number generation.
-If you end up as a chick, deal with it. Very Happy

After a rapid training session, a unit of troops from the U2SC Squadron was put on alert at their HQ located in central Europe. A call came in from France: a rash of alien abductions was taking place. Climbing aboard their transport, the four men prepared for battle:
Squad Private Lou Biggs had nominal command of the unit, accompanied by rookies H. P. I. Racine, Joe Korn, and "Supreme" Beef.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

The unit landed, finding the weather dark and rainy, debris from an alien attack strewn around the area.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

The squad moved cautiously into cover, but before they could put any sort of tactical plan into action, a strange creature appeared from the shadows, firing at Beef as he moved forward.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

The shot missed, and Beef lined a shot up on the alien attacker, blowing it away.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Rookie Beef then took up a covering position at the hood of a ruined car, and as a new group of aliens moved forward he lined up a snap shot and took yet another attacker down.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

H. P. I. Racine moved into cover near some benches after watching Beef's stellar gunplay. Racine, however, wasn't in the mood for any such subtle killing.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

As Racine lobbed a grenade at the alien in cover, the squad covered their eyes before the taxi exploded. When the fire and smoke cleared, Central Command informed the unit that there were no remaining aliens and that they were clear to head back to home base.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Looking at the report of the battle, the three Rookies were granted their basic promotion to Squad Private.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Shortly after returning to base, though, a jetfighter shot down a UFO that had been spotted over Germany. With little time to rest, the unit was resupplied and shipped back out. This time, Sq. Korn would be replaced with Sq. M. X. Lowflight, a heavy weapons specialist that had been injured on the training mission. His machine gun (and Rocket Launcher) would doubtless be useful in assaulting a crashed alien craft.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Upon landing, the unit quickly moved to take covering positions, watching the terrain for threats...
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

...which quickly made themselves evident: two small, grey aliens moving forward to defend their crashed ship against the encroaching humans.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Sq. Racine moved quickly to cover that flank, taking a quick shot at the aliens in their positions, but missing.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

The squad then witnessed something strange. One of the aliens appeared to concentrate upon the other, forming a strange-looking purple energy field between the two.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Lou Biggs saw this and, calling upon his endurance training, dashed forward in an attempt to stop whatever was happening.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Biggs lined up a shot...
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

And gunned down the first alien... whose death throes seemed to travel to the other alien, killing it as well. Lou nodded back to rest of the squad, a grin on his face showing his pleasure at effectively scoring a double-kill.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Back on the original axis of attack, Sq. Beef tossed out a smoke grenade to provide cover for his advancing squadmates.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

This appeared useful as an alien moved forward out of the ruins of the ship.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

M. X. Lowflight, however, didn't feel like waiting for the smoke to clear and simply sprayed bullets through the smoke at the partially-hidden alien. He got lucky and killed it.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

One last alien could be spotted guarding the entrance to the downed craft, and Beef moved forward and gunned it down.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

With the guards apparently dispatched, the squad positioned itself outside the entrance to the craft in covering positions.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Suddenly, from inside the ship, a strange reading appeared along with what appeared to be an alien made entirely of energy. Racine had it in his sights and appeared to take it out...
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

...and missed. Lowflight had seen the movement and guessed that the strange alien was now behind the wall in front of him. He pulled out his rocket launcher...
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

...and blew up a quarter of the ship, along with the alien.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Upon returning to the base, stock was taken of the current roster of troops in U2SC Squadron, who had come through two missions without any casualties... who could tell if it would remain this way going forward...

Agreed, Jason that is pretty spectacular! I shall likewise be eagerly awaiting the exploits of our squadron. And I get a chance to be a black guy, which is pretty cool. Is it just me, or do Lou and Low's characters kinda resemble them in real life?

This is great! This is as close as I'll be able to get to playing it irl for awhile, so I appreciate the time you're taking to put it together.

Without asking for your handle if the answer is "yes", are you a goon?

Ah, thought maybe you were given the "Let's Play" subject and the fantastic composition of the post. I don't hang around in there much myself, at least not enough to feel I earn a "goon" title, but every once in awhile I'll latch on to a funny or interesting thread for bit.

Regardless, this thread is gold.

I've read through some LP's on the site (even putting up with the ads), but I've read and done similar things at other sites before. Smile

I'll see if I can put together another session tonight, but I need to paint a Mini for the November series.

Part 2

Back at the base, some basic infrastructure was put into place. A workshop, for speeding the development of new weapons, and a new power generator had their constructions begun.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

While the situation room monitored the globe for incidents, the science team let us know that they would like us to "bring back a live one". Cutting dead ones open was only giving so much information. Work was begun on a containment facility that would be used to hold living aliens should one be captured.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

While continuing the scan, the XCOM Council sent us an urgent message...
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

...and a team was rapidly assembled to deal with the imminent threat. The team was similar to the last one, but Squad Private Reddy ("Red") Sniper was added in place of an assault trooper.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Upon landing, the team found themselves in a railyard with a number of alien "power nodes" around. The Engineering Team determined that cutting power to those nodes would delay the explosion of the nearby bomb (which still had to be found). Cpl. Beef moved forward to disable the first node. Shortly after doing so a new alien appeared... which he promptly shot.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

The team moved forward into the yard, disabling additional nodes, before spotting the bomb itself.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

On the left flank of their advance, Corporal Biggs disabled a node, then rapidly advanced OVER a railcar instead of through it, in order to shoot an alien in the face with a shotgun.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

This unfortunately left Lou in a very exposed position. Another alien advanced to the nearest railcar and, exhibiting more restraint than Biggs, simply fired through the railcar. The shot hit Biggs square in the chest, nearly disabling and perhaps killing the trooper.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Rather than recklessly advancing again, Cpl. Biggs took the smarter course of action and retreated to where Cpl. Beef could approach and apply emergency medical attention.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

This position was also well-covered by their heavy weapons specialist, Lowflight, who gunned down the alien when it pursued Biggs.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

The bomb was then disabled, but two new aliens suddenly appeared, leaping onto the tops of two railcars.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

One of the aliens tried shooting the sniper, Reddy, when she moved to a better position. It grazed her, dealing a nasty burn. Cpl. Biggs was unluckier during HIS advance, taking another hard wound from the second alien. At the end of the run, however, he was in position to blow it away with, yes, a shotgun round to the face.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

In an attempt to take out the final alien, Lowflight hefted his rocket launcher. Unfortunately, the blast was unable to take out the alien who had taken some cover.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

The Red Sniper, however, did not miss, and the threat was no more.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

After a return to base, the condition of the team was examined, before planning took place for subsequent missions.

Part 3

After returning to base after the last mission, a few of the troops were quietly complaining about their armor. While visiting the convalescing Biggs, one of the researchers let slip that they were about to put some new under-armor protections into the field which would hopefully improve their chances. The next mission would see a couple of front-line troops wearing enhanced armor.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

That next mission would occur fairly soon: reports had come in of abductions in Los Angeles, California. While the weird behavior wasn't THAT far out of the ordinary experience of the average Los Angelino, there were enough pieces of data that indicated this was an Alien problem and not just LA being normal.

With the casualties still laid up, a new rookie was added to the squad to boost their numbers: V. I. Agradah was called up from her training.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

The landing zone was a construction site. The squad moved into their standard deployment formation.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

After HPI Racine moved forward to point, two pairs of aliens were spotted to either side of the XCOM advance:
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

As pointman, Racine suffered the initial attacks from the alien forces; he was nearly disabled.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

The rookie, V.I. Agradah, immediately made her impact felt. By lobbing a grenade with great accuracy, she was able kill one of the aliens threatening Racine's flank. She had apparently read Lou Biggs's report, too, as she aimed her blast at the creator of a two-alien link and thus killed both of them. This freed up one side of the unit's advance and allowed Racine to get into cover and receive medical aid from Supreme Beef.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

As is tradition, Lowflight fired a rocket at the other aliens in cover. As also seems to be tradition, he missed. The aliens in cover traded shots with the troops for some time before Racine finally got a headshot.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Racine also shot down the second alien there, ending the threat at the site.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Racine would pay the price for his heroics, however, and would spend quite some time in the infirmary.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

After the mission, the US XCOM HQ showed their appreciation to the EU division by transferring one of their men to U2SC Squadron for further cross-training.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Frank would be much needed, with three of the squad's more experienced soldiers still laid up.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Finally, with the end of the month, the XCOM council and the U2SC Commander discussed the results of the prior 30 days' actions. Panic levels were largely calm around the world, though Africa was beginning to be a bit uneasy with the aliens' actions.

JasonMurphy wrote:As is tradition, Lowflight fired a rocket at the other aliens in cover. As also seems to be tradition, he missed.

As is tradition, Low fired for the apex. As also seems to be tradition, he missed. (I keed!)

And meanwhile, while the squad was out doing something productive, Joe Korn was back at HQ randomly chucking a football around. "Aliens? Yeah, I don't know guys, it's kinda early for me. Let me know when it's over." Very Happy

Edit: And again, thanks Jason, I know this has to take some time. Very entertaining.

U2SC Squadron - An XCOM: Enemy Unknown "Let's Play" Empty Re: U2SC Squadron - An XCOM: Enemy Unknown "Let's Play"

Post by JasonMurphy on Sat Nov 10, 2012 8:41 pm

Chapter 4

The squad had little downtime before an alert siren filled the base. A UFO had been spotted in flight over South America. Fighters had been distpatched, and the troops were told to prepare for a mission. While suiting up, the squad watched the fight unfold on their barracks monitors.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

With a cheer at the UFO's being shot down, they left for their transport and prepared for the coming mission. Sergeant Beef would be leading the squad, which contained two heavy weapon specialists (Lowflight and the new transfer from L.A., Tris "Insane" Frank) along with the sniper Reddy and the forward assault trooper that had distinguished herself on the prior mission.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

The unit landed, finding themselves in a portion of Brazilian jungle that had been denuded by the crashing ship. Moving forward, they quickly spotted the UFO's forcefield and advanced upon its location.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

As they advanced, two new aliens of a type they had not seen before shot out from the crashed ship. They appeared to hover over the ground, supported by small jets on their back.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Sgt. Beef quickly snapped off a shot and with a fantastic eye destroyed the fast-moving target.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

He then stepped up from behind his cover and calmly shot down the other one as well.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Shortly after this shot, though, two mode aliens, of the more familiar "small, grey" type were spotted along the left flank. The unit rapidly shifted focus towards this new threat.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

The new guy, "Insane" Frank, promptly showed that he would fit in nicely with the squad and fired off one of his rockets, destroying the first of the two aliens.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

The sniper, Reddy, then got herself on the board with a long-distance headshot.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Moving into position outside the entranceway to the ship, the unit found additional resistance in the form of two of the floating aliens. Lowflight immediately gunned one down:
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

The second one traded fire with the team before finally being taken down, after which Beef applied medical aid to an injured V. I. Agradah.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

The squad then advanced into the ship in a tight formation, approaching one of the forcefields within the ship, shutting it down before moving in to see what they find...
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

...which turned out to be another of strange all-energy forms of life.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

With little patience for the remainder of the squad, V. I. Agradah promptly ran in and shot it in the face.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

For his exemplary performance in the mission (especially shooting down the initial attack pretty much single-handedly) Supreme Beef was the first in the squadron to be promoted to Lieutenant. The new guy pulled a muscle or something, and would be out of action for about a week.
